Wild Bird Feeders - Who Eats What?

I'm always amazed at the variety of birds I have show up at my wild bird feeders. I have a bird feeding station outside my home office window and love to see who's visiting and see the new arrivals. Its a good way to take a break from my work and be able to observe nature from my window. I'm in a suburban neighborhood and you can find so a lot of different types of birds that show up to feed here. You do not need to have a place in the country to take pleasure in feeding the birds and getting to know the kinds of wild birds that live in your area.

One of the reasons I get such a variety of wild birds at my feeders is that I have a variety of food and methods for birds to feed. That's why I call it a bird feeding station. Its not just one wild bird feeder, but many unique kinds. I have them on shepherd's hooks or bird feeder poles to try and keep them out of reach of the squirrels and give the birds a bit of space between the feeders. I love to see the wild birds perched on the tops of the bird feeder poles, on the clothesline or the lip of the bird bath waiting their turn at the feeder of their selection.

So who eats what?

Sunflower Seeds. Probably the most prevalent sort of feeder can be a tube feeder filled with sunflower seeds or mixed seeds. These will attract the most birds; songbirds, cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, juncos, etc.

Nyjer or Thistle Seed. These are a favorite of the finches, especially goldfinches. It is possible to use a tube feeder for these too, but you want one made for Nyjer seed, it has a extremely fine mesh. It is possible to also use a stocking kind of feeder, essentially a mesh bag.

Platform or Ground Feeders. Doves, juncos, towee, quail are ground feeders. They eat seed spilled from the hanging feeders off the ground. Since I have cats, I also put a raised platform out for them to feed from a lot more safely.

Suet. Woodpeckers, Flickers and Nuthatches love suet. I only feed suet during the colder months as there does not seem to be much of an audience for it in the summer when bugs are plentiful. Suet cakes can be hung in suet feeders or mesh bags. The birds will need to have the ability to cling to the feeder, often upside down, to eat.

These are just a couple of of the examples of what you'll be able to put in your wild bird feeder to attract a selection of birds to your yard. Once you hang your first feeder and enjoy watching your visitors, you'll wish to add an additional kind to see who else comes to visit.

How would you coax a wild bird to land on your hand?

When I was young my grandfather would whistle and a small wild bird would fly onto his finger, unfortunatley he has passed away, but how did he do it?
No wise cracks from the gutter minds!

I have managed to get both my local pair of blackbirds this tame.

First find out what birds you have in your garden-this will determine what kind of food they will find tempting.Mealworms and currents (currents are my blackbirds faves) are both ideal for most members of the thrush family (blackbirds, thrush's, robins etc).Robins apparently only like mealworms though so don't bother with currents for them.Sparrows, pigeons and finches prefer seeds.

First you put the food on a bird table and let them get it while you either go in the house or move a good distance away.Do that for a couple of weeks so they get to learn that your garden is a good place to eat.Feed daily so they learn it is a reliable eatery too.Try and feed at the same time each day so they know when to arrive.

Then stand slightly closer to the table after putting food out and wait for them to visit-stay very still while they eat.Gradually over days or weeks decrease the distance between the feeding birds and you-only make the distance smaller when they land and start eating instantly and seem to accept you at that distance.Never move while they are eating or they will panic and fly off.

While going through this 'gettting gradually closer' process you can also get them used to the idea that a certain sound means food-just repeat a whistle or other sound of your choice each day when you finish putting their food out.

When you finally reach the point of the birds being happy to eat with you just outside of arms reach of them it is time for the final stage-put food down on the table as usual, but slightly less than normal and put the rest on your hand, make the call as normal and wait, holding your arm out.For the first few days they will probably not come to you and will only eat from the table but stay still and keep trying and eventually one will go for it.The first time they will probably just land for long enough to grab 1 thing from your hand and then fly off but over time their confidence will increase.Eventually they will sit calmly on your hand and eat.

The main key is to never move when they eat and only speak in a quiet, calm voice if you must speak at all.Never try to stroke or grab them-it must all be on their terms. It takes a lot of patience to build up a wild birds trust in you but the results are worthwhile. The blackbirds in my garden are now so tame that they will eat from my hand and then if they want more just sit still and wait while I pour some more currents onto my hand.

If you own a dog or cat make sure they are shut inside while the birds visit as a predator nearby will make them nervous. After hand feeding a bird always wash your hands well before touching food or anything else as birds don't wash their feet!

Ten Tips on Feeding Wild Birds on a Budget

Knowing how to stretch your bird feeding budget in hard financial times can make life easier for wild birds and their human friends.  As hard financial times in the country make it impossible for bird lovers to feed their feathered friends the way they used to, there are some things bird lovers can do to continue to care for their feathered friends and still survive economically.  Here are a few good tips:

  • Shop around—Just as shopping around helps to stretch the human home budget, it also helps to stretch the budget for wild bird feeding.  Check flyers from farm supply companies, pet stores and landscaping companies for the best deals and stock up when the price is right.  Online dealers may offer more competitive prices but you must, also, keep in mind shipping and handling fees when calculating the best deal.
  • Buy in bulk—Generally, large sized packaging yields a better price per pound and it, also, means that you will be running out of supply less frequently.
  • Offer a better quality bird seed—Although a better quality bird seed may be more expensive it may be a better value because less of the bag is made up of filler seed that birds will not eat.  Offering a choice of bird seed that is, specifically, intended for birds in your area will insure that less food is wasted.
  • Grow a garden full of bird seed—Bird seed is very easy to grow and will attract more   birds than seeds in feeders.  An extra bonus from this activity is that bird feeders will not need to be filled since the birds will, gladly, eat straight from the plants.
  • Offer alternatives to seeds—Birds eat more than seed.  Try offering your aviary visitors bread scraps, chopped fruit, nectar and other types of food as an alternative to expensive seed.  This activity may surprise you with a whole new different bunch of species paying you visits.
  • Refill feeders less frequently—Birds are notorious for spilling seeds.  Waiting a few days before filling the feeders encourages them to feed off the ground saving money on bird seed and giving less maintenance for the owner of the yard.
  • Choose feeders that are efficient—If you watch your bird feeders for a few days, you may find that you are feeding other creatures besides birds.  Deer, raccoons, squirrels and other wildlife often treat themselves to food meant for birds.  You can discourage these creatures by buying feeders with smaller openings and built in cages to discourage these raiders.
  • Don't purchase poisons—Many wild birds are very happy to munch on flies, spiders and other insects.  Withholding pesticides will save money on for lawn and flower bed maintenance and enables birds to take advantage of this natural food.
  • Make your own bird food—Commercial seed mixes and suet are, usually, more expensive than buying the raw material.  Buying the seed that is enjoyed by the specific species you are trying to entice will make the food go farther for less.
  • Remove several feeders—You can save money by removing some feeders and replacing them with bird-friendly bushes, nesting boxes, brush pile and bird baths that will still attract birds without the cost of feeding them.  Birds will, still, enjoy coming to a friendly habitat.
