Tarps That Will Weather The Elements
Tarps are easy to find, but they are not all made of the same material. Some tarps have more features that make them more resistant to weather. When choosing a tarp for outside use, it is best to consider many factors. 1. Waterproof or water resistant. Tarpaulins made of poly material should be 100% waterproof if they are properly made. Look for heavy duty tarps with 30 mil coating or more. For water resistant canvas tarpaulins, the best choice available is heavy weight cotton based tarps that has gone through a wax process to make it repel water better. 2. Most tarps have grommets that should be rust-resistant if the tarp is going to be used outside in the weather. There are several types of metals that are rust resistant, and the type of metal may not be indicated be in rust free steel or plastic. As long as the grommets are described as rust free, you should be fine. 3. Mildew. It is best to get mildew-resistant poly heavy duty tarps, especially in moist climates. This will help save the items you have stored under the tarp, as well as the tarps themselves. A mildewed tarp is not a pleasant sight and it deteriorates quickly. In the case of poly tarps mildew can be removed by washing the tarp. 4. Rot. Rot goes along with mildew, but is more extensive. Tarps can rot from moisture and from age. Poly Tarps are rot proof Whether you have green tarps, blue tarps, yellow tarps, or orange tarps, it is important that the tarps do not rot away when they are used in the weather. If they do, they might get holes in them or shred, and they will become unusable. 5. Sun. White tarps, silver tarps, and yellow tarps are naturally reflective. However, most colored tarps should have U.V. protective coating. This keeps the tarpaulin looking new. It also keeps the tarp strong and durable because it has not dried out and weakened. 6. Wind. The wind can make short work of cheap, poorly made tarpaulins. To get a tarp that will last in high winds, look for a tear resistant heavy duty tarp. Poly ropes embedded in the hems also makes tarps more durable in the wind. 7. Cold. A poorly constructed tarp will become brittle in frigid temperatures. It will crack and the poly material will break up. To combat this, some tarpaulin manufacturers have made a special type of tarpaulin that will hold up to Arctic temperatures. Look for this type of heavy duty tarps if you live where it gets cold. When you are looking for tarps that will weather a storm, it is best to check out the claims of the manufacturer. If a tarp is promised to be mildew resistant, rot proof, or have strong rust free grommets, it should live up to those promises. A respectable tarpaulin vendor will stand by its merchandise.

What would be good for a projector movie screen?
Im having a bonfire/ movie party where a get a projector and and a big white thingy and hang it from two trees that are beside each other and project the movie of that. But the thing is I don't know what the white thing would be. I need something that is about 21 ft by 21 ft and it has to be cheap. I was thinking maybe a tarp but I don't know if they make them that big. And btw it is going to be outdoors.... for those people that are dumb LOL JK!
wow, that’s pretty big.
You are at the point where a presentation projector or home projector just won’t cut it. You need to look into more professional units. A sheet might be disappointing but if your set on it you might be able to find large pieces of fabric from a textile company. One such place is www.rosebrand.com
I would recommend scaling back. A 10 x 14 foot screen is pretty huge and its a standard size in the pro area. (it’s also the right aspect ratio for HD which your going to want to do at that size.)
If you’re looking to buy this you should keep an eye on e-bay. There’s a lot of stuff there to fit the bill. There’s a company Called DaLite that makes screens in that size. They are usually on ebay all the time. You should be able to just get the screen and not have to waste the money on the frames and stuff. You want something that’s White and "Front Projection". There’s rear mattes but they are more pricy and require a brighter projector. I took a quick look on e-bay and found a full kit. You just want the screen but this will give you an idea what im talking about. The kits are great BTW, if you want to drop the cash. EBay item #360124400726
As for the projector. I recommend renting if this is something you’re only going to use a few times a year. There are rental houses in most major areas. (If you in So Cali i can recommend one or two) If your going to wait till its fairly dark then you can get away with as little as 2200 ANSI. (That’s the measurement of brightness for a projector) i would suggest something closer to 3500 ANSI. These can set you back a few grand for a good used one and you always have to consider the bulbs (Which need replacing and are a few hundred dollars). Renting should only cost $150-250 a weekend and the bulbs and maintenance are someone else’s problem. We could get into all the resolutions and all that but you should play with some rentals before you get into making that kind of investment.
To sum it up.... Buy the screen used and rent the projector. I have done this a few times and its awesome. You’re going to love it. Have you considered how you’re going to play the audio? A screen that size tells me you’re going to have a few people watching. Computer speakers aren’t going to cut it. If this is all still over your budget, you can rent the whole kit. Projector/Screen should set you back anywhere from 350/550 depending on area. It wont be 21'x21' but it will be big and get the job done.
Good Luck! Your going to have a blast.

The Many Uses of Tarps for the Housewife
Did you ever find yourself looking for something to cover the kid’s sand box to keep the animals out of it? If your children have a sand box that does not have a cover, think about using a tarp. They are ideal for keeping stray animals out of the place where your children play. They are durable enough to make a great cover and most have riveted holes so you can tie them down. They can protect your children’s play area and keep wind and rain from scattering the sand.
Tarps are handy for covering just about anything that you want to keep dry or protected from the sun. Due to the fact that they come in an array of sizes, you will be sure to find one that is just right for the job. Do you have firewood that you want to keep dry? How about covering your boat for the winter with a heavy duty, waterproof tarp?
There are many different uses around the home for tarps. They can be used to cover furniture or carpet for painting. You can use them to protect your car if you don’t have a garage. Use a tarp for covering a leaky spot on your roof until you can get it repaired.
If you have an outside pet, put up a tarp over his area to keep the hot summer sun from beating on him. Using one of these over a kennel will keep him from being exposed to the blazing sun on those hot, humid days. Planning on having an outside birthday party or get together? Using a tarp as a canopy can provide you with an area to set up the tables with food and gifts.
If you need a quick idea for the kids who are out on summer vacation to cool off in the back yard, use a tarp as a slide with your water hose. They will enjoy their impromptu slide and this may be a cure for the “I’m bored” syndrome that you begin to hear a couple of weeks into their vacation. Use a tarp to make a play area for small children to protect them from the sun. If you have clothes line you can put a tarp over the lines and have a makeshift play house.
Do you need something to put yard sale items on and don’t have enough tables? Spread a tarp on the ground for your toys, games, linens, and various other yard sale items that you want to display. Use one for one price items. You can have a 50 cent tarp, a dollar tarp, whatever you decide. You could also use one for a sunshade over your yard sale.
When most people think of tarps they think of the old green or gray colored covers. Today tarps come in a lot of different colors. You can choose from white, red, silver, yellow, and even camouflage. You can still get the gray or green if you want but the choices have expanded and if you want to draw attention to something, red will do the job. This would be a great idea for your yard sale.
Tarps are perfect for covering furniture when you move. They are heavy duty enough to protect your furniture from dust and dirt and keep tables from getting scratched. The different sizes available will allow you to choose the right one for covering mirrors, couches, appliances, and more. No one likes to move and arrive at your new home to discover that your washer or dryer has a big scratch on it or your favorite table has been nicked. Tarps can prevent this from happening and keep your furniture safe and secure until you arrive at your new home.
Cover your lawn furniture for the winter with a tarp if you do not have a garage or building to store it. Tarps are available that are waterproof and crack resistant. This is the perfect solution to a limited storage area.
Do you have shrubs or small plants that need to be covered when the temperatures get below freezing? A tarp will do the job and keep them from getting burned by frost. With the grommets on the sides of the tarp you can easily run a small rope through to tie the tarp down and prevent it from blowing away.
There are so many sizes and colors of tarps to choose from that there is sure to be one to fit your needs.
