Comparing Vinyl, Nylon, and Canvas Tarps

In order to find the right tarp for the jobs you have in mind, you need to consider the material being used. There are several options available including vinyl, canvas, and nylon, and each has their own strengths and weaknesses. Neoprene, laminating, and vinyl coating treatments are often added to these materials to make them even more versatile. In order to select the right material, consider the qualities you need the tarp to have.

Canvas Tarps

In comparison to vinyl and nylon, canvas is the most environmentally friendly option because it is made from cotton. An extremely durable material, this material can resist water for years so long as it is retreated. Canvas has the added benefit of being breathable, which makes it ideal for covering machinery and other items that are easily damaged from condensation.

Canvas tarps are great for many different uses, but do have limitations. When used in places where there is a large amount of moisture, the fabric will mildew and mold. Dark colors and the water resistant coating used to treat these covers can rub off onto other items, and they can tear in high winds when they are pulled tight. Therefore, tying them directly across equipment is not recommended.

Vinyl Tarps

Vinyl tarps are considerably stronger than polyethylene and are completely waterproof. Best of all, vinyl tarps are available in a wide range of colors, sizes, and weights making them ideal for a variety of different uses. If you are in need of tarp for outdoor applications, you will have to select the right weight because not all of them protect against the sun.

Laminated vinyl that is 13oz for example, is best for indoor applications such as a gym floor because it isn't treated with a UV coating. A light 10oz vinyl tarp, on the other hand, is UV resistant and the perfect weight for extremely jobs such as covering a baseball field. They have enough to stay put in the wind while still being light enough to carry and work with. For applications such as truck box covers and roofing that requires added strength and durability, consider heavier weights such as 18oz coated vinyl.

A type of vinyl called 'temper tent' vinyl remains pliable in extreme cold and is waterproof as well as fire retardant. It is also considerably more durable than other vinyl tarps. Temper tent tarp is more affordable than other vinyl covers and is flame retardant.

Nylon Tarps

For the ultimate in strength and damage resistance, nylon tarps are at the top of the list. With the added neoprene coating, this 16 oz material is more pliable and supple than any other types available and is extremely resistant to tearing. Neoprene coated nylon has a high level of resistance to UV rays and mildew making them ideal for outdoor applications. They are also impermeable by grease, chemicals, and acids for uses in and around your home and workplace.

Canvas, vinyl, and nylon are all great choices for tarp material, but they each have their own set of benefits and limitations. Consider what you will be using your tarp for and which qualities you need it to have. With all of the different styles and sizes available, you are sure to find the right one.

What kind of primer will cover vinyl wallpaper?

I live in a mobile home and would like to paint my daughter's room to match her bedding. The wallpaper is actually part of the drywall so removing the paper isn't an option. The paper is white in color with red and green marbling on it. We're on a budget so I can't really afford to test different primers. I already have some purple latex paint that I'd like to use. I should also mention that my daughter is turning 2 soon so it needs to be durable. I hoped maybe someone had already done this before and knows what will work. Thanks in advance for any answers or suggestions.

This is one I can relate to. We moved into an older mobile home, and will live here until we build out new one behind it. But the walls, em eww, so I washed some dowm with spick and span, rinsed and then let them dry. I then painted with KILZ or you could use another white pigmented shellac.
That stuff is great, after it dried, I painted with a paint from Lowes. Looks nice and clean.

Using Clear Covers or Poly Covers with Unibind SteelBack Binding Spines

If you have ever tried to use a clear cover with a Unibind SteelBack binding spine you probably discovered the hard way that they don't work well together. Unfortunately the heat from the Unibind machine will warp or sometimes even melt the clear cover. Obviously this doesn't leave you with the beautiful finished presentation that you want. This article is designed to help you understand what types of covers you can and cannot use with your Unibind SteelBack spines.

1. Clear Binding Covers: Most 5mil, 7mil or 10mil standard clear covers are not compatible with your Unibind binding machine. The heat from the binding machine will ruin the cover and your document. However, special heat resistant clear binding covers are available for use with Unibind and Fastback binding systems. These heat resistant clear binding covers are made from a different material that can withstand higher temperatures.

2. Vinyl Binding Covers: True vinyl binding covers such as imperial vinyl covers are NOT compatible with your Unibind system. The heat from the system will melt these covers. This is only true for covers made from actual "vinyl". Some individuals call poly covers which are actually plastic vinyl covers. As you can see below poly covers are compatible with Unibind spines.

3. Poly Binding Covers: Nearly all poly binding covers should be fully compatible with your Unibind system. However, if you have a particular style of poly cover that you are thinking about using it is always a good idea to try a sample in your Unibind machine to make sure that it won't melt or warp. Generally speaking, the heavier the cover the better chance that it will work properly in the machine.

4. Regency Leatherette Covers: All regency composition leatherette binding covers are fully compatible with the heat from your Unibind system. These covers are available in approximately ten different colors and give your documents an elegant look and feel with a leatherette finish.

5. Paper Covers: Generally speaking paper covers are fully compatible with the Unibind System. Many users like to use linen weave binding covers along with steelback spines or you might try using a metallics cover to co-ordinate with your aluminum SteelBack spine.

This covers most of the different categories of covers that are available on the market. However, if you have a question about a particular type of binding cover it never hurts to try a sample in your machine to see how it reacts.
