7. Scissors

8. Side Cutters
Side cutters look like a pair of pliers with cutter jaws. They will cut through rope or metal wire much easier than scissors will.
9. Tape Assortment

10. Hardware Kit

I'm trying to put together a good set of tools. Primarily for just fixing small things around the house. What are the essentials for a decent set of tools?
A good basic tool set includes:
Hammer
Pliers ( needle nose, regular, and channel lock )
screwdriver assortment ( medium, small, phillips & flathead )
hacksaw with blades
adjustable wrenches ( several sizes )
clamps
2 pipe wrenches
a small voltage tester or Volt/Ohm meter
nail sets
tape measure
level
caulking gun
vise grip
wire cutters
electrical tape
metal straight edge
combination square
pencils
assortment of nails & screws
utility knife & blades ( box knife )
putty knife
spackle, window putty & wood glue
Drill ( cordless would be best ) with bits and a #2 screwdriver bit

You'll also need a saw horse or portable bench to work on.
With those tools, I wouldn't be afraid to tackle most any household chore. Start small and add new tools as you need them. The bigger jobs will need things like files, a grease gun, wood chisels, punches, a circular saw or a saber saw, a Cat's paw, crow bar, and some specialty tools.
Little story:
When we were first married (38 yrs ago ) I told the wife: "Give me tools" Christmas, Birthdays & Father's day, give me tools. She asked "wouldn't you like a fancy tool box?" ..nope, I told her straight out: "I'd rather have five hundred dollars worth of tools in a cardboard box than an empty $500 tool box..get me tools" Later, I became a Licensed General Contractor, and used them all. One day I told her: "Honey, I've been thinking about getting a rool-away toolchest so I can organize all my tools." ..her response ( 30 years later ) ..."You said you didn't want one!!" I now have a nice toolbox and a ton of tools. They were acquired a little at a time, some cheap, some more expensive, but every one of them was a good investment.
