This sounds rather like the battery is in need of replacement. However, you were not quite clear with your question. If the engine will turn over from the key with a jump start, then the battery is suspect. If, however, you had to take the jumper directly to the starter and did not use you leads from the mower's battery, then you need to try the mower's battery first. If you already did this and the mower did start t hen your battery is OK. If this did not work then you need to suspect the starter solenoid.
