I've made life sized hollow clay sculptures using slab construction with internal clay reinforcements wals. You only can go as fast as the clay allows you, you need to let clay dry to a bit less than leather hard before you can build onto it. You can use external armature (e.g. pieces of wood or whatever) to prop clay up until it firmed enough to carry its own weight. In addition you can construct large clay sculptures to be in more than one part. The advantage of this is that it's easy to be fired. If you make an internal armature out of metal or wood you will need to remove it before firing or wrap it in paper so it doesn't touch the clay. And you will have to make sure the sculpture is hollow before firing and that the clay wall are of reasonable even thickness (to prevent cracking). All that is taken care of using clay slabs. You will need, however, to make a maquette of your piece as you have to have a clear image in your mind of what exactly you want to build. You can't go back to the base and do some major readjustments because it doesn't go any more with the top.
Generally I would not attempt making something really large until you have experience using clay in small sculpture. And if you don't have time and patience to follow through with a project which easily can take you a couple of months until it's completely done. And you need to take especially into consideration how big the kiln is you will want to fire your statue in. Spending a lot of time on something which then won't fit into your kiln is not going to be fun.

With the chemical coloring expansion of bronze, there are many bronze artists of today that love to experiment with the numerous chemical ways of bringing out a wide number of colorful reactions upon their bronze artwork.
There is not only a fun point of classic uniqueness when an artist truly has learned the many wonderful techniques of modern day artificial patina, but there is a necessity and desire to know these many methods of patina so be able to properly repair severely damaged bronze statues and other bronze artworks.
