Root Cutting and Clearing Takes Special Tools

Many homeowners have problems with roots penetrating the pipes around their homes.  Roots can extend a long way from the tree itself and will seek out moisture provided by the pipes.  Pipes typically have small cracks and holes that allow moisture to escape and feed the roots.

Over time, the roots will enter these cracks or seams in the pipe.  When they do, they can cause a wide range of problems.  They may trap small debris and grease which will start building up.  This will slow down the action of your drains.

If you do not get the situation fixed, then the roots will continue to grow and further complicate the obstruction.  If it completely clogs up, you may even experience flooding in your basement.  You certainly do not want that to happen since it can be costly to repair.

In order to see if you have a problem that requires root cutting and clearing, you will need to call a professional.  A pro can utilize a video camera inspection system to check the conditions inside your underground pipes.  If there is a problem found, then its location can be determined precisely.

A hydro-jetting machine can be used to remove small obstructions caused by roots.  However, more serious obstructions will need to be cleared with special tools and equipment.  A power drain auger is one of the most efficient ways to remove roots from a drain.

These augers are basically heavy-duty snakes that run along the inside of the pipe.  As they go along, they will cut the roots up and free the obstruction.  As the snake is pulled back, it will pull some of the roots along with it.

It is possible for you to rent one of these machines and fix the problem yourself.  However, it is best for you to call a professional to handle the situation.  Some drain augers do not have enough power to remove roots properly.  If you mess up and break the snake inside your drain, you will need a professional to deal with it.

It is also important to note that roots will likely grow back after they have been cut and cleared from the drain.  For this reason it is very important that a herbicide be used to kill roots and prevent future problems.  You need to make sure only natural herbicide is used so it does not cause problems with the environment.  You should never pour harmful chemicals down your drain.

Cutting tree roots from the lawn?

I have tree roots that surfaced in my lawn causing bumpy mowing. What can I cut the roots out with without the soin dulling the blade?
Without the SOIL dulling the blade....

Tricky situation depending on tree in question.

As a rule of thumb, you can cut ONE 6 inch root a year.
Expect to see die back the next season,

My suggestion is to put mulch all the way to drip line.
Add a few boulders, ferns or ground cover.

Do not fight the problem, work with it.

Mulch will do nothing but rot, hold moisture and feed the tree.

Now go drink two beers and think it over.

Hydroponics gardening guide - preparing hydroponic nutrient solution, transplant seedlings and taking cutting for clones

How to preparing hydroponic Nutrient Solution

Nutrient solution is made of water with dissolved fertilizer. It is preferable to have good quality water to be mixed with the fertilizer, the amount of which is always indicated by the manufacturer. It is very important to check and adjust if necessary pH level of nutrient solution with liquid pH adjusters. Usually, pH level of the nutrient solution depends on the plant; however, most often it is between 6.0 and 6.5 for the majority of the starter cubes, with the exception being Rockwool, which needs pH level of 5.5 to 5.8. Fertilizing young plants, a gardener should use a nutrient solution as weak as ¼ to ½ of the full strength suggested by the manufacturer. Only plants older than two weeks can be fertilized by the full strength nutrient solutions. It is recommended to keep the growing medium moist, but not too wet or soaked with the hydroponics nutrient solution.

How to Transplant Seedlings

The seedlings should be transplanted when the roots have grown out of the starter cubes. It is just necessary to place the seedling along with the starter cube on top or into the permanent growing medium, which can be any hydroponic growing medium or just soil.

Notes in taking cutting for clones

Cutting, as a method of plants propagation, works well only if every step of the procedure is done correctly. Otherwise, experiments may result in devastating consequences. Though, when done properly, up to 95-100% of all cuttings grow successfully, it is still may be a good idea to take twice as many cuttings as needed, if you are making first steps in growing cuttings.

One of the hints to increase chances in successful outcome is to use distilled water, while growing cuttings. Generally speaking, this is one of the most reliable and proven methods of plants propagation, suitable for most of the plants. Other examples of propagation techniques are dividing, air layering, and tissue culture. It is even possible to root cuttings without the use of any growing media in specific hydroponic systems. After forming the first roots, such cuttings are usually transplanted into any type of preferred growing media.
