How can I save the orchid my friend gave me the other day?
My friend gave me this purple orchid he picked from their garden the other day. It's really special so I want to keep it "alive." The problem is that he gave the flower with no roots or anything, I mean, after all, he literally just picked it. I searched for the basic stuff about orchids online but I can't seem to find anything on what I should do with an orchid picked like a rose. haha. Please help me. thank you!
Like most plants, if the stem isn't dead place in a clear jar with pond water-stem down-and sit it on a window ledge with filtered sunlight to full sunlight. Hopefully within 1 week it will start to form roots-they look like tiny hairs. If so, transplant to a pot with drainage and a saucer and always water from the bottom.

This type is very easy to maintain and handle from among the common varieties of orchid plants.
Orchids bloom fast in a span of three months if you handle them well. Place your orchid near the window so that it can receive natural light from the sun all throughout the day. But be careful not to expose them too much to sunlight because it can be harsh on them. The east side of your house is the perfect place for your orchids to receive light and to project a day and night effects. If natural lighting is not possible, use fluorescent lights as artificial lighting placed about a foot distance from the orchid flowers.
Caring for orchids includes giving them balanced air temperature. Orchids thrive mostly in temperatures within 55 degrees to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range. For those orchids exposed to more than 90 degrees stop blooming and lose their buds in the process. It is important to make sure that orchids retain moisture to keep them blooming always. Water the plants sufficiently once in ten weeks to retain moisture and to produce lovely blooms in the coming days. Avoid overwatering to prevent the roots from rotting.
One way of caring for orchids is putting fertilizers before it blooms. Use water based fertilizers in right quantity for orchids to bloom as frequent as possible. Pruning also helps the orchid as it blooms into more beautiful set of flowers in the next days to come. By following these ways of caring for orchids, these plants will grow healthier, fresh looking and vibrant all year long.
