Though understated has its place, the place is certainly not in the garden, and the Papaver Paeoniflorum is anything but understated. This gorgeous flower rises gracefully from almost leafless stem and unfurls to reveal a riot of color. The poppy plant of the Papaver Paeoniflorum variety stands from 2 – 3 ft tall with luxuriant foliage and a single poppy flower dominates each stem. These poppies preside over the garden and lesser flowers when they begin to bloom. The buds are packed tightly and provide an explosion of color in a compact flower.
Lavender, orange, salmon and pink poppies are available these days thanks to horticulturists hundreds of years ago. They began being bred by 19th century horticulturists who recognized this hardy flower's potential. Although at the time the common poppy was a brilliant orange flower with none of the variety on color or petals seen today. The poppy can be found in nearly every color but blue, however the Papaver Paeoniflorum really stands out in the lighter colors. It requires a soil which is loose since drainage is important, clay soils should be well aerated and mulched. Other than that the Papaver Paeoniflorum poppy is resistant to most diseases and funguses and will thrive in areas where more delicate flowers refuse to grow.
Every garden needs a Queen and the Papaver Paeoniflorum poppy fills that role well, by flowering through the late spring and early summer months and then retiring gracefully to allow other blooms the spotlight. The Papaver Paeoniflorum is an annual flower and if volunteer plants are not desired then the buds should be pinched off before seeds set, this will encourage more profuse blooming and keep the seeds from coming back the next year. These flowers are gorgeous set against a fence or as a mid – row flower. They overshadow low growing flowers so their perfect spot may not be in front of the pansies.
