Caring for Phalaenopsis Orchids
Orchids have long had the reputation of being difficult to grow. At the same time, their unique characteristics make them intriguing to many gardeners and even novice growers. This leads to one very common question: Which type of orchid is the easiest to care for? The answer from orchid experts is almost always phalaenopsis orchids.
Moth orchids (a nickname given to the phalaenopsis for its unique shape), tend to be popular with novice gardeners (as well as experts) due to the ease of care they generally require compared to other, more complicated, types of orchids that are available for home growing.
Regardless of your level of skill with plants, the phalaenopsis orchid is an excellent choice. Add it to an existing collection for its gorgeous (and repeated) blooming or pick it up as your first orchid for its relative ease in care. Whichever the case, consider these reasons for growing the phalaenopsis orchid:
Obtainable Humidity Requirements – Many orchids flourish in tropical environments and need their native, high humidity replicated in the home. This is not always easily done and can be one of the main deterrents for those considering growing orchids. Phalaenopsis orchids can do quite well in varied humidity levels. Ideally, they should be grown in an environment providing about 50% humidity. This is easily obtained with common methods such as humidity trays or a humidifier.
Reasonable Watering Schedule – Phalaenopsis orchids, while needing proper care, are somewhat forgiving when it comes to their level of moisture. Most will need to be watered one to two times a week.
Workable Sunlight Requirement – While many orchid varieties are sensitive to sunlight and have very specific light requirements, the phalaenopsis is relatively easy to satisfy in this regard. Lot of indirect sunlight is best. A Southern or Eastern facing windowsill or a shaded outdoor area work great.
Obtainable Temperature Requirements – Again, orchids often need their natural environment recreated. This can be difficult if you live in a mild climate and are housing a tropical plant. Temperature changes can also greatly damage your orchid. The phalaenopsis orchid however can thrive in temperatures common in most homes. A range of 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal but your plant can survive in temperatures ranging from 60 to 90 degrees.
Small Effort / Great Reward – Probably the most attractive thing about the phalaenopsis orchid is its gorgeous flowers and their tendency to reappear. Phals keep their flowers for a significant amount of time, often for 3 months at a time and, unlike many of its orchid "cousins", the phalaenopsis will often re-bloom within the same year. As re-blooming is one of the more challenging aspects of orchid care, this is an excellent cause to give phalaenopsis orchids a chance.
The ease of care and ability to deal with common growing mistakes make phalaenopsis orchids attractive to many novice gardeners. Their fragrant and gorgeous flowers make them solid favorites for expert growers as well. A little care will be greatly rewarded and you will easily maintain a gorgeous orchid you are certain to cherish.

- They continue to flower, branching from old stems until it uses up all its energy and dies.
- Phal orchid leaves are also attractive – they're shiny and darker than most orchid leaves.
- Whereas most orchids should only be repotted every two years, the phal can be repotted every year.
- They do well with a low level of light e.g., two-40 watt florescent lamps or an east-facing windowsill will work miracles.
- Phalaenopsis produce babies on their flower stems that will develop their own root system after which these babies cut from the "mother plant" and become mature orchids on their own.
- They like warm nights – no less than 65˚F or 18+˚C.
- They always prefer to be damp and readily let you know when they're too dry.
- There is even an island off Taiwan called Orchid Island that's named after the Phal orchid.
- Many orchid experts consider these epiphytic orchids to be the most popular type of orchid grown by orchid enthusiasts today.
- The American Orchid Society statistics show that 75% of all orchids grown today are Phalaenopsis orchids.
- The first mention of phal orchids was by the Father of Modern Botany, Carolus Linnaeus, in 1753.
- These orchids were among the first to appear in Victorian tropical flower collections.
- The popularity of phals is undoubtedly due to:
- The lovely colors of these flowers
- Their multiple blooms
- The length of time that their blooms last
- The overall attractive appearance of the plant in general, even when it's not blooming
- The fact that they are relatively easy to grow
