What is a pillow sham used for?
I got a gift with a comforter, a skirty thing, 2 sheets, 2 pillow cases and 2 pillow shams. For the life of me I can not figure out what the pillow shams are for... they open in the middle and are too small for regular pillows so they obviously don't go over the pillow cased pillows.
Do I have to buy a second set of pillows.... I'm OK with more pillows, but they are an odd size, smaller than a regular pillow. Where would I get those and what size or style should I ask for.
3 graduate degrees and I am stumped by bed linens.
Well a regular pillow should fit and really they are just for decoration. I think your supposed to take the pillow out of the sham to sleep on it, at least thats what my mom told me when I was growing up. If your into a nice looking bed like maybe Martha Stewart then use them...mine however stay in a drawer.

What Are All Those Pillows with Comforter Sets?

• European Sham: Sometimes called simply a euro sham, this is another type of pillow case. The biggest difference in the euro and standard shams is the shape. Most euro shams are square in shape, though they can be various sizes. Many run 26 inches by 26 inches. These pillow cases fit over a European or euro pillow.
• Square Pillows: To further complicate things, some comforter sets also feature a square pillow. This pillow is positioned on top of the bed, in front of all other pillows (with euro pillows behind it and shammed pillows behind those.) This is not usually a pillow case, but a small pillow.
• Oblong Pillows: Some sets also include an oblong pillow. This is a pillow, not a cover, and may be in various sizes. Some people place these at the end of the bed while others use it as a toss pillow. It may replace the square pillow in some sets.
• Bed Skirts: It is also common to find bed skirts in complete comforter sets for master bedroom furniture. This fits between the master bed mattress and the box spring and hangs over the edge to cover the box spring.
As you can see, decorating your master bedroom set with the right comforter set does take some getting used to when it comes to pillows and linens, but a completely put together bedroom set does stand out as impressive.
