How to heat up part of the house? Have more than 1 zone?
I am in the early stages of building a new duplex, still planning it. The current house is often cold but if we turn up the heat, the whole house is warm but we only need maybe 2 rooms to be warm.
What is the answer? 2 zones of heating (2 thermostats)? Or space heaters in one room?
With the duplex, if there are 2 zones per unit, that makes it 4 zones and I don't want to make the system too complex.
Since it's a duplex, you'll want separate heating systems for each side. The newer heating control systems can have a single furnace and air handler control 2 or more zones, each zone having it's own thermostat. This is accomplished by using dampers controlled by solenoids or low volt electric motors. If gas is reasonably available (natural gas) I'd recommend it for efficiency of cost. Otherwise, I'd say heat pumps, which give you AC as well as heat. Don't, if you can at all avoid it, ever use resistance type electric furnaces, no matter how low the price. Space heaters are as bad or worse. Almost as important as HVAC is the insulation package. Be sure to use blown not batted insulation, with moisture barriers, seal top and bottom plates as well as polycell at pipe and wire penetrations, quality windows (vinyl in South Wood in North) with Low E glass, and radiant barrier roof decking is an excellent investment.

The purpose built training and visitor centre is within the Bellshill unit with heat pumps, underfloor heating, controls, buffer and hot water vessels and a heat recovery ventilation system installed and operational. As the largest European manufactures of heat pumps and refrigeration equipment, and a range from 6kw to 800kw the Delonghi – Climaveneta range is MCS accredited.
