Heirloom or Non Hybrid Garden Seeds for Survival Gardening?
While this term is somewhat unheard of, it is sure to gain popularity over the coming months.
Already, there are many manufacturers who advertise these seed banks as a way to supplement your home emergency and disaster survival items in the event of a catastrophic emergency.
Emergency seed banks contain thousands of non-hybrid seeds in many varieties and species. These seeds are usually packaged in high quality metallic bags and in a long lasting desiccant. The entire packaging is housed in a vault that is made to withstand water and damage.
Non-hybrid seeds are selected for their high nutritional value and hardiness. In addition to their sturdy heirloom quality, the seeds are open pollinated, allowing for harvesting of more seeds for the next years crop. Genetically modified seeds usually cannot be harvested for a second or third crop.
While the notion of storing a survival seed bank may seem a bit paranoid, scientist have been doing the very same thing for about a decade with the Millennium Seed Bank Project. Maintaining seeds in the event of a disaster is not only reason for storing heirloom varieties.
In 2002 the soy plant industry was in danger of a catastrophic disaster because of the destructive Cyst Nematode. A Russian seed bank in St. Petersburg was able to provide soy bean seeds resistant to the Nematode and thereby saving the soy industry.
As of 2009, there are dozens of countries that maintain seed banks containing extinct and non-extinct heirloom variety seeds to preserve the food supply.
Survival seed bank is one of the latest trends in survival gear preparedness, and maintaining a kit that contains special heirloom seeds could become a part of every person crises readiness plan. Many people are including a survival seed banks in their home's emergency items, much like storing batteries, water, food and other survival gear.
More and more manufacturers are starting to advertise these seed vaults as a "must have" disaster and emergency survival items which should find their place in your home emergency gear.
Survival Seed Bank is a kit that has anywhere from 15-30 different vegetable varieties of open pollinated or non-hybrid seeds, usually packed into some form of resistant and well sealed containers (made of plastic or other long lasting and durable material). These vaults contain hundred or even thousands of seeds of different heirloom varieties.
Seeds need to be open pollinated and non-hybrid, which insures not only hardiness and nutritional value, but allows the harvesting of seeds for the next year crop. Generally, hybrids cannot be harvested and planted the following year, so hybrid varieties are not included in any of the survival seed bank kits.
The different vegetable varieties in survival seed bank are carefully picked for nutritional density, storage life and of course, germination rate. Only best tasting vegetables and hand picked nutritious plants which are able to grow in almost any gardening conditions are selected. GMO vegtable garden seed?
I am starting a larger garden this year and want to be as close to organic has possible. But, I have notice the different seeds organic,heirloom, hybrid etc. I am interested in the heat-resistant variety of seeds. Does this mean the seeds are genetically modified if they are not organic and heat resistant? I live in zone 8 and need heat resistant plants because of the dry weather.
No, that doesn't mean that are genetically modified. Some plants just don't like heat, like spinach, peas, and collards. That doesn't mean you can't grow them-it just means you have to start them earlier in the year or wait later in the year for the heat to clear out. I planted collards here in zone 8a in October. We had our last harvest a few days before Christmas. Some plants like peppers and tomatoes that will wilt in extreme dry heat will also tolerate a light afternoon shade. Your crop will be slightly reduced but it will work.
