Mantis Tillers – The Powerful yet Quiet Home Tiller/Cultivator
Mantis Tillers – The Powerful yet Quiet Home Tiller/Culitvator
My friend Jake and I have been friends for a long time. We went to high school together, got hired by the same firm, and live in the same town. We're both very competitive and for whatever reason, we do a lot of betting. Oh, we don't go to the casino, bet on horses, or buy lottery tickets--we just like to bet on things. We bet on the weather, on the boss's mood, on how many floats will be in the local parade, on how fast we can mow our lawns, and just recently, we've made bets on whether or not mantis tillers really live up to what the ads claim them to be! Okay, so I lost the bet and because I lost, I'm writing this article. It's all part of the bet...but I am really impressed with the tiller!
Jake's wife, Tisa, wanted a tiller that she could use. Usually Jake does the weeding, edging, etc., but Tisa wanted something that she could use around the pond. Jake and I went on-line, did a google search, and read the ads for different tillers. When we saw the one for the mantis, I began to laugh! One of the claims by a customer was that "the tiller is so quiet, I don't have to be concerned about waking up the neighbors at 5 AM."
I told Jake that if the tool had the power that the ad claimed it has, then obviously it's going to be noisy. After all, what outdoor tool isn't noisy...weed whackers, lawn mowers...they're all loud! Jake disagreed. He really thought that it was possible to have a powerful quiet tool.
Tisa read over the information on the mantis electric home tillers as well, and told Jake that she wanted one. Thus, a bet was on! Jake bet me that the tiller would be quiet. If he won the bet, I would have to mow his yard for a month and write this article. If I won the bet, he would have to mow my yard for a month and write a letter of complaint to the company, including that he should've listened to his best friend's advice and never ordered the stupid thing in the first place!
Jake placed the order and the tiller arrived pretty fast! We (Jake, Tisa, my wife Laura, and I) got together for a backyard cookout and to put the mantis tiller to the test! Tisa had the honors of starting the tiller, which I have to admit is pretty awesome. You just plug it in and pull the trigger! Anyway, I was about ready to burst out in laughter as I anticipated the loud noise...the loud noise that NEVER occurred!!! The Mantis tiller is a quiet tool!
So, this article is almost done and I'm off to mow Jake's yard. Hmmm...I think I'll bet Jake that I do a nicer job mowing his yard than he's ever done!!! The winner gets...yep, I need to come up with something really great for the winner! I know I can with this bet!!! How much do you want to bet?

Things to Consider When Buying a Garden Tiller
The purpose of this article is two-fold. to introduce a website, Garden Tiller Reviews, at http://www.gardentillers4less.com, that will provide you will additional helpful information regarding garden tillers and to provide some of the key factors to consider when buying a garden tillr.
Overturning the soil and getting ready a garden for planting can be exhausting and tiring work. Using garden tillers is the most effective and back-saving methods for the gardener to achieve this essential task.
Garden tillers conserve a healthy dose of time when in contrast to turning the dirt with a shovel and break up weeds at the same time.
Garden tillers play a key function in maintaining gardens as well as getting them ready for planting. There are basically two types of tillers which can specialize in diverse gardening capabilities:
The front-tine tiller type is slender and compact and accomplishes weed control relatively well.
The rear-tine tiller type can till larger regions efficiently and can cut through the roots of small trees. The operator of the tiller can choose the depth that the tines should dig by employing the depth bar adjuster.
The metal blades that rotate and perform the actual work of the garden tiller are referred to as tines. These tines dig into and break apart the ground, turning the dirt. The placement of the tines on the tiller, either in front or the rear, dictates key differences between the two types.
Kinds of Garden Tillers – Front-tine Tillers vs Rear-tine Tillers
Front-tine tillers – These tillers feature the placement of the tines beneath the engine and ahead of the tiller’s drive tires. This type is best suited to work on soft ground. This is the type utilized for somewhat easy jobs like formerly tilled dirt. The reason for this is that these tines only rotate in the forward direction that effectively pulls the machine through hard ground as opposed to truly tilling it.
Rear-tine tillers – These tillers have the tines placed behind the tiller’s drive tires. This is the much more powerful type of tiller with more powerful digging capacity. There is a safety shield of metal covering the tine region to lessen the danger of flying debris, rocks and dirt. The operation of this kind of tiller can be powered by either standard rotating tines or counter-rotating tines. These are known as as SRT or CRT.
Types of Garden Tiller Tines – Standard Rotating vs Counter-Rotating
- Standard Rotating Tine (SRT) – On this kind of tiller, the tires and the tines rotate in the very same direction. These models are heavyweight and can break up somewhat hard ground. This sor also has exceptional compost mixing and fertilizer distribution capabilities due to the rotation direction the tires and the tines go.
- Counter Rotating Tine (CRT) – On this breed of tiller, the tines and drive tires rotate in opposing directions. The cycle of the tines provides resistance to forward-moving motion of the tires. Doing so permits tines to a lot properly chew and break difficult ground. CRT models are the perfect choice for forming new flower arrangements or tilling big regions.
- CRT/SRT Combinations – There are some models of tillers in which the tine rotation can be switched between the two options. Doing so gives the operator the benefits of both functions.
How to Choose the Best Garden Tiller – Elements to Consider
There are many distinct sorts of tillers available for various applications. Most kinds are a lot more suited to home or residential {gardening though others are a lot more ideal for commercial operations. Selecting the best garden tiller for your functions involves an evaluation of the future {gardening plans. Doing so is vital so as not to buy a tiller which won’t prove out of date for the future needs. Here are some variables to consider when selecting a garden tiller.
- Front vs Rear-tine tillers. Front or mid-tine type tillers propel the tiller ahead while digging and generally requiringe several passes to adequately prep the planting region. These kinds of tillers are the ideal options for small or medium sized duties. Although this kind may call for a lot more work from the operator, they generally cost less in contrast to the rear-tine type. Bigger jobs are a lot more properly dealt with by the rear-tine class of tiller. This is a heavier machine which demands less effort on the part of the operator in contrast to the other type.
- Kind of Ground. Preparation of the ground, in particular difficult ground, is best attained by rear-tine tillers due to the powered tires on most models. Front tine tillers or mini tillers ought to be applied for softer ground.
- How much will you till? Mini-tillers with front-tine operation are normally sufficient for home gardening. They generally weigh close to 20 pounds. These kinds cost less than the heavier tillers and are all that a medium sized garden demands for preparation. These compact tillers are actually capable of many duties and frequently come with hole-digging features. But if you possess a lot of ground to till, you must consider acquiring a bigger rear-tine tiller.
- Horsepower. Garden tiller price ranges vary according to brand, model and power. The horsepower measurements generally range from one to eight. Tillers with larger horsepower call for less effort from the operator as they tend to pull themselves through dirt. Models with lower horsepower take a lot more manual effort from the operator.
- Cost: The larger rear tine tillers are obviously more expensive. Add the bells and whistles and the price increases. If cost is an important factor then you won't want to buy a bigger tiller than necessary to till your garden space. Of course there is the option of tilling others gardens to help off-set the cost.
- Guarantee/Repairs. Other concerns when buying the garden tiller is its depth capacity and the coverage of a warranty. This depends on the planting needs, the limited depth of some tillers may take them from the running. Trusted manufacturers provide warranties on their tillers. They generally vary in coverage being either for components and repair or replacement. This is a quite vital consideration as you will most likely by no means plan to replace the garden tiller.
{The investment in a garden tiller warrants some research. A great way to evaluate the options is to rent a couple of different kinds of tillers from the nearby store to evaluate the ideal option for your needs.
