Diatomatious earth has special properties that make it an excellent product to use in pool filters. One of those properties is that each microscopic shell is actually porous in the same way as a chunk of coral is.

I have a Hayward pool pump I can not get to prime or work. Any suggestions?
You are filling the pump basket with water I hope? You haven't let it run dry or not pumping for more than 5 minutes? Either of these conditions can burn out the shaft seal, making the pump VERY difficult to prime and also will lead to a leak, directly under the motor.
If you've made sure that the volute was filled and never ran it dry, a couple of things. First off, have a look at the lid gasket. It's supposed to be seated squarely, those ones,sometimes tend to lift out of the track. Checks it's condition as well. They tend to pinch down a lot at the back of the volute. If it's been flattened, time for a new one. Second, check the two drain plugs, one at the front, the other at the side of the basket housing (volute). Make sure they're in snug, particularly the one in front.
If none of that was the issue, then I'd need some more info, like is this a new installation, distance to the skimmer and difference in height, pool age, was the pump moved slightly, was it ever run dry and what you did last, before you lost the prime on the pump. Knowing if there were air bubbles comming out the return a lot, when vaccing helps me too.
