Why does my girl dog have swollen nipples?
We got a new dog a few days ago, a lab/pit mix. We were told she was 10 months old and hadn't had her first period yet. Not spayed. Then a neighbor said that she had to have recently had puppies because of her nipples, they are pink and prominant and frankly hanging. Never having had a girl dog, I wonder if she did, or could be in heat or even pregnant. She also looks swollen from behind in her girl area. Help!!!
It is very likely she is pregnant or just had a litter. If you don't want her to have more puppies in the future (and avoid other health risks) you should talk to a vet about getting her spayed.
She probably went into heat without the previous owner knowing it, or they did know it, and didn't care to tell you about it.
A dog's gestation period is about 64 days, so you could have puppies in under two months, depending on when she had the pregnancy-producing intercourse.
