The Elephants of Sri Lanka

The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 after a variety of locations leading to their current one in Pinnawela. Starting with a herd of only five baby elephants, the orphanage has expanded to house over 60 elephants with breeding contributing 23 baby elephants to the herd since its conception.

There are thought to be roughly 3000 elephants in Sri Lanka, but with the constant land development they are being squeezed into smaller and smaller patches of habitat. These cramped conditions often lead to man and elephant living much closer than they usually would, creating problems when man or beast overstep their boundaries. Elephants are shot and killed because of ruined crops and aggressive behaviour brought on by this invasion of their territory and can be left wounded, or can leave orphans behind. It is here that Pinnewala will take in and nurture these animals, whether it is raising baby elephants left behind or helping those injured in confrontation.

The orphanage itself is funded by the government in a bid to help and care for these majestic creatures and has more than 100 members of staff, each doting on these gentle giants. A small entrance fee is required, but every penny goes towards the upkeep of the elephants, and with every baby elephant drinking 25 litres of milk a day and each adult getting through approximately 75 kg of green matter a day, plus 2kg of a food mixture, they need all the help they can get.

The day starts at 8am with the babies being given their milk and the herd roaming the acreage. At 11am it’s time to visit the river for a wash and some fun and games. The walk down will take you pass various stalls and shops selling souvenirs, usually elephant themed. After bath time the herd returns to the site and work for a few hours moving logs and other such jobs before returning to the river for another two hour bath. After being tethered for the night, the elephants and given their evening feed before bedding down for the night.

There are two elephants at the orphanage that stand out from the rest. The first is Raja, an old elephant who is blind in both eyes and the second is Sama who only has one front foot after stepping on a landmine in the North of Sri Lanka. Without the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage it is unlikely either would be alive today.

A visit to this sanctuary will make your Sri Lanka holiday truly memorable, an experience that brings you within reach of these beautiful animals and lets you play a part in looking after the orphanages current inhabitants and the generations after them.

If you could combine two animals together, which ones would they be?

Like and Elephant and a crab!
Giant elephant crabs!
Or a Crelephant.

A roach with anything bigger would be great! Can you see dog-sized roaches? or what about cow-sized roaches! They would be "unsquashable" and not afraid of you anymore. They might even attack if provoked!!!

Elephant Figurines

Symbols of Power and Wisdom As the largest animal on earth, the elephant symbolizes many things to various cultures. From good luck to power and wisdom and longevity to strength, the practice of placing elephant figurines within the home has long been used to achieve proper balance. Known as the keepers of the house in feng shui, elephant statues are used near entrances to allow those who reside there to attract power and keep it safe. For years, this gentle giant has been revered as a sacred animal in the East. Due to their long life and intelligence, they are symbols of wisdom. Elephants provide an allure partially because of their size. However, they are also known to be extremely intelligent due to the communication skills they display, their mourning habits and strong ties to their family. Herds are typically made up of the oldest and largest elephant and their immediate family, which includes daughters, sisters and nieces. The elephant is a social creature and as the herds grow they will break off into smaller herds, but they maintain bonds with the original herd. They display an amazing sense of caring among other members of their family, helping each other take care of babies, bonding together to ward off danger and the mourning that is shared when one member of the herd dies. Elephants even celebrate the birth of their calves. Due to the extreme sensitivity of these amazing animals, elephant statues and elephant figurines are very popular symbols used within many homes. Their serene qualities are said to attract power and wisdom as well as a sense of peace to the home. The giving of a white elephant signifies wishing the recipient prosperity, peace and honesty. Considered sacred throughout Asia for centuries white elephant figurines are excellent for placing in a home or office for good luck. Elephants have long been used by those who practice feng shui. Elephant statues placed near the front door also bring good luck, strength to the home and protection for those who reside within the home. The placement of elephant figurines in the bedroom increase love and fertility. A mother elephant and baby are symbols of bonding between parents and their children. A set of seven elephant statues are used by feng shui practitioners to bring childless couples fertility. The number seven is representative of children in feng shui. They also bring academic success to children and many people place elephant figurines in the area where their children do their homework. Elephant figurines are available in a variety of materials and are placed according to the elements that are needed for a particular use in a space. The five main elements - metal, fire, wood, water and earth - are used to maintain the proper balance depending on where the elephant statue is placed. This will influence which one of the elements is activated. Selecting the right elephant statue will depend on what is desired. This serene and charismatic animal will provide a different application as well as a beautiful addition for each room.
