Garden Wall Fountains—It Makes Your Garden Area Complete

No garden, no matter how beautiful, is complete without garden wall fountains.  These water features turn a typical setting into something with a touch of magic.  These features can be very lovely, but they only remain beautiful, magical and in working order with the proper care.  Luckily, very little is required for you to enjoy years and years of beauty from your fountain.

To start, you want to banish algae from ever forming in your wall-mounted Water Feature, as there is nothing beautiful about the look and stink that comes from these pests.  There is always bleach as an option; however, prolonged use can actually ruin the finish of your water feature.  There are products made just for the delicate natures of water features, which have no bleach in them.  These natural algae inhibitors only need to be added once a week to the feature to keep the green menace at bay.  Some brands even help deter mosquitoes and other pests from calling your feature "home."

Cleaning your garden wall fountains is the next step to keep them in working order.  You will need to drain all of the water from the fountain and remove any collected debris.  Take off any accessories such as light bulbs and take apart any areas that you can.  Wipe down the entire feature and make sure it is clean.  If there is a lot of build up you may want to use a soft bristled brush.  Using distilled water can help eliminate the hard water build up coming from your fountain.  You may also want to take apart the water pump and give it a thorough cleaning as well.

Another thing you need to remember when caring for your garden wall fountains is to add water to it on a regular basis.  Water evaporates, and pets and other wildlife drink from the fountain.  All of these things cause the water levels to decrease.  If the water level consistently drops below the water pump, you are decreasing the life of that pump and will have to replace it much sooner than normal.  Keeping the appropriate water level also helps keep noise down so that you are enjoying the calming peaceful sounds the feature was meant to provide.

Following these simple steps will keep your garden wall fountains running and beautiful for years to come.  Keep the magic in your garden by keeping your water features in tip top shape!

My brick built garden wall has white staining on it. How do I get off?

My husband says it is a chemical reaction and that it will not come off.
It looks a little like paint splashed on it but it is appearing from the mortar.
I just want to get it off as it looks horrible.

forget answer no 1 ...its total rubbish !..have been a builder for over forty years ...we have bought and laid millions of bricks ...have built over 4000 extensions ...what you have is effervescent salts and a reaction to the mortar joint getting wet (rain)..before it had properly set ...garden walls are particularly prone to this as they can be attacked from both sides ...you can use a hose and a wire brush ..but your husband is right ..it will sort it-self out in time ....and there is no additives on the market you could have added to prevent it ..but we all ways cover walls if rain is due

How to Build a Garden Wall

Selecting Materials for Your Garden Walls and Fences

Before starting working on your garden, it is essential to think about the material you want to use in your garden walls and fences that will best suits your requirements. Hereunder is given a list of material mostly used in garden walls and fences.

Stone Walls

Stones used in walls are of different types and their appearance largely depends on the use and type.

Dry stone walls usually don't have any mortar. These are thick towards the base and retain soil at one side for stability. In some cases a backward lean (batter) is needed for extra stability, if the wall is higher than 450 mm (18 inches).

Mortared stone walls on the other hand are relatively stronger and more stable. No backward lean is required for them. Two stone wide walls usually have a smooth face on both sides while one stone wide wall have smooth or fair face on one side. Manufactured stones are also available to build such walls.

Brick Walls

Bricks walls are also available in different styles and are always mortared. They require a considerable concrete foundation. In case your bricks are not frost resistant, engineering bricks can be used on the top of the wall or above ground level. Some sort of coping or tile creasing would be of great help. Both engineering walls and coping will give you a choice to add character to the wall. Stone and brick combination would give an attractive look to your wall.

Rendered Block Walls

Rendered block are comparatively more economical than brick. They are more prone to dampness and therefore measures should be taken to keep the dampness away from creeping into the blocks and push off rendering. Stippled finish (Tyrolean) or normal paint can be used to stain the rendered surface.

Screen Blocks

These are also used in garden walls and are see through patterned blocks available in large variety in the market. These are thin and weak walls require regular piers.

Timber Walls

These are used as a free standing like in raised bed, or in retaining wall in front of a bank. The drawback with them is they give off tar in hot conditions and perish. Telegraph or wooden poles can also be used in same manner.

Timber Screens

Different forms of simple or ornate trellises are included in timber screens. These are available in different designs and colors, which enable a designer to choose a right one according to his requirements.

FENCES

Timber Panels

Timber panels usually include close boarding with vertical feather-edged boards; overlapping larch strips (horizontally); and interwoven strips (mainly horizontal.

Timber

The most common timber fence type is passlisade that is made from close boarding mounted on arris rails between posts. Other fences are ranch rails with horizontal planks or rails; diagonal intermittent laths on a timber frame; posts and horizontal rails (typical paddock fencing); ‘hit and miss' with vertical planks; ‘hit and miss' with horizontal planks and chestnut fencing where vertical pieces of chestnut are held by two or three horizontal twisted wires.

Wire & Steel

Posts and strained horizontal wires; chain link; wire or chicken netting; stock fencing are included in wire fencing. Steel include wrought iron and vertical railing.

Natural Screens

Bamboo, reed, woven willow, woven hazel, heather and so on are part of natural screens.

It is important to keep these considerations in mind for designer.
