Can I create my own overhead garage storage space?
I have exposed rafters in my garage. I thought about the overhead storage cages by Hyloft or similar, but I wondered if since the rafters are exposed I could simply buy the wood (maybe 4x8 size) and create a shelf over the entire width of my 2-car garage.
If so what type of wood?
First determine if the rafters can support the weight you intend to put there. Many modern engineered rafters barely support the roof. In my old house the 2x12 rafters easily supported a 3/4" plywood floor and a ton of stuff.

Garage Storage And Organization
Are you a do it yourself person who likes to fix your own car and repair things around the house? Do you have hammers, rakes, and wrenches somewhere in the garage that you can never find when you need them? If you are like most homeowners, your garage has boxes, bicycles, trash bins, and walls of shelves packed with many forgotten things. Today, more and more homeowners seem to utilize the garage as a large dysfunctional storage space for everything that will no longer fit in the house.
If you are tired of the clutter and lack of available space in the garage then it is time for you to have a highly organized system of storage that you can actually use.
It all starts with planning, in order to have well organized and efficient storage space, you must design your garage so everything has a place of its own and you know where that place is. Your goal is to maximize your storage space for functional use and efficiency.
When planning your garage storage, knowing what things should to be stored that have limited use and the items that need to be available for daily use. It is a good idea to know the basic sizes of items and how often they will accessed. An example of this planning is the consideration of a workbench in the garage and how many drawers and how much storage is needed for your hand tools and related items.
Here are some questions to help get you started.
Will I need a workbench with drawers for tools, should the workbench be wood or metal, have a maple work top, laminate top, should the workbench be mobile on casters or stationary. Do I have room for a workbench?
Do I need slatwall or pegboard wall storage behind the bench, what hooks, baskets, or tool strips do I need for small screwdrivers and pliers.
Wall storage cabinets, what size, how many, on what walls will they be used, do the cabinets need shelves, extra storage drawers?
Do I need additional shelves, open or bin type shelve storage? Open shelves are for the often-used tools, golf balls etc. Storage bins can be easily labeled stored in plain sight..
Do I need extra wall storage such as slatwall organizers that include hooks, baskets, hanging cabinets, bicycle hooks, etc? Storage for almost anything even kayaks.
Do I need overhead storage? Overhead storage racks are available to be mounted for easy access and capable of holding 400 lbs each. These racks are often used for long term storage.
Once you know what kind of storage you will need the actual designing of the garage is very much like doing your kitchen.
If your budget allows start with the garage cement floor you can checkout some low cost options such as floor paint, epoxy, and PVC floor tiles
Now the wall cabinets, the garage walls generally have the largest open area for storage options. Upper and lower storage cabinets are available in standard sizes. A somewhat unique garage cabinet is the floor to ceiling cabinets which are 86"-96" in height.
Additional wall storage options are available if the cabinets are not enough. Slatwall organizers and storage accessories get items like sports equipment to bicycles off the garage floor and onto the walls for easy organized access.
Workbenches are items that every do it yourselfer must have, a decision to incorporate the workbench into the overall garage design will save you money later. The workbench, is it Wood or Metal or do I build it myself?
