Concrete Science - Concrete and Cement

Concrete is so common in our buildings and all around us today that most of us take it for granted. It should not be dismissed as a common and simple material, though, because there are elements of this building material that should be appreciated. It certainly is respected by those that work with it as a foundation of buildings and much more.

Pouring of concrete is a simple enough activity. The cement truck pulls up and the nozzle is placed over the desired place, usually prepared ahead of time with forms into which the concrete will be poured. This is similar to mixing up a batch of cookie dough, then placing it into appropriate forms with which to shape them as they cure or bake. Concrete is no different.

There are four ingredients that go into a batch of concrete. Gravel, sand, water, and cement are mixed together. There are variations on the amounts of each of the ingredients depending on where it will be used and the specific conditions of the area and the curing process that will occur.

Concrete is a wonder as these four ingredients dry into the super hard and weather proof material that it is. The glue that holds it all together is the cement. The added water is the activator for the cement glue. The science behind the curing process starts with the mixing of the ingredients to a specific consistency and the crystallization that occurs. Crystals grow until the ingredients are all mixed together and are beginning to form a solid block. The crystallization starts the hardening of the project, but even when you are satisfied with the hardness of the area and begin to use it, you should be aware that the crystals continue to transform and grow.

The growth rate of the crystals will make a difference in the resulting strength or weakness of the project in the end. Where the crystals grow too quickly, the concrete sets up faster than planned and this can cause cracks and surface defects later. Too much water in the mixture is also a cause of cracks, as is water that settles on top of the surface when it is curing.

Concrete pouring is really an art as much as it is a science. There are things that experienced concrete contractors know that we would never see. When the mixture comes from the truck's funnel, it has a particular consistency that must be just right. Only the most seasoned contractors hold the key of knowledge necessary to a perfect job.

What's the strongest concrete, cement, or masonry?

I'm trying to make my weight set by making the weights plates out of concrete or cement. I already made a mold so all I need to do is pour in the concrete or cement mix.

What's the difference between concrete, cement, and masonry? What's the strongest and have the highest density?
If concrete mix is the best to use, then what is the best concrete mix?

The guy above me is right on the money. Concrete is the strongest and granite, while an expensive aggregate, would be really nice. That being said, you are going to have to reinforce the heck out of this stuff. I've seen it done with fiberglass tape for small castings. If you don't do this, your weights will constantly be chipping, spalling, and cracking under the g's when you put them down.

If you truly want the densest material for your weights, I'd recommend Osmium or Iridium. I'd doubt you could lift the weights if you made them out of those materials in the current mold you have and they have to be machined, they can't be cast except under very specialized conditions (very high temperatures, oxygen free atmospheres, etc.).

Ian McEwan's disturbing novel is given a chilly shimmer in this film adaptation by Andrew Birkin. The film takes place in a concrete slab of a house situated on the outskirts of an English town. The father (Hanns Zischer) is a consumptive creep, while the mother (Sinead Cusack) is a sweet and understanding matriarch. When the father dies of a heart attack after his garden is paved over, it is too much for the mother to bear, and after a few weeks she wastes away and also dies. This leaves the children to fend for themselves. The eldest sister and brother, Julie (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Jack (Andrew Robertson), have to care for the younger children, Sue (Alice Coultard) and Tom (Ned Birkin). Without parental supervision, the four children give themselves up to their secret longings. Jack hides in corners to masturbate, but Julie uses her sexual attraction to lure Jack into an incestuous relationship. Even the younger children have their problems: Sue is mostly mute and spends all her time obsessively writing in her journal, while Tom feels that deep inside himself he is a girl trapped in a boy's body. The children hide the mother's remains in the basement and live off her bank account. The neighbors don't suspect a thing --that is until sleazy Derek (Jochen Horst) begins to come around in his red convertible, trying to get a date with Julie. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Introduction to CCMA- Concrete Masonry Association

CCMA is chief and reputed trade association that is well-known to provide concrete building material. It is seriously involved in investigation, advertising and promotion and with mechanical and administration relations. This great association helps to improve the manufactured goods knowledge and visibility of business importance to block masonry appliance for concrete business buildings and retaining walls. This site is an excellent foundation and base for engineers, contractors and planners.

The frequent materials that are used in brickwork structure are granite, brick, sandstone, concrete block and rocks. With these types of materials, masonry supplier build tough brick steps, pathway, masonry construction and sandstone walls. Even though masonry creation is extremely strong, the excellence of workmanship, objects is used. Mortar exhibits way to the masonry that greatly contributes the durability and mostly looks of masonry structure. Sandstone walls for all time add massive significance to your home. Few stone walls are there, which are built just to attract and made eye catchy to create beautiful boundaries and various levels of background for your home.

Housing masonry contractors also construct retaining walls necessary for proper drainage system and to maintain a level of grade for the background. Many masonry contractors provide a variety of options with concrete, cement blocks, and other types of rocks and filed stones. Bricks are an essential part of masonry that is used in different ways in a number of constructions. Concrete block masonry is used to construct walls and retaining walls to protect the landscape and residence place. Most of the concrete building blocks have unoccupied cores that offer immense compressive power. The cores with concrete material and with steel produce reinforcement with great lateral power for masonry constructions.

Masonry is mostly different structures of building, which involves individual part and that are bound together by mortar. Sandstone blocks are used in masonry is rough and hard. Stone masonry used dressed stones that are known as ashlars building material. Masonry using unevenly formed stones is named as debris masonry. Debris masonry and ashlars masonry can be used in cutting of stones. This type of material is not favored for hard masonry as it needs much and more mortar. Blocks of normal concrete and cinder concrete are called as concrete masonry components. These components are bigger as compared to general bricks; therefore they are quite faster for constructing wall of an estimated size. Tile blocks have less water absorption percentage as competed to brick masonry. They are structural core used for the walls of garages, commercial buildings and industrial unit.
