What composter should I get.?
I am planning on getting a composter. Most of the stuff in it will be the stuff my rabbit cage weeds and left over foods. Websites would be great. In school we have been making composters so I might be able to take them home so will have stuff to start it out.. What is your favorite compost bin or what ever you use.
Most people just make one out of wood and throw their refuse in it. I can't see how one bin would be better than another unless it was aerated or drained. most bin companies are probably just selling a "better bin than the other guy's" just to cash in on the eco-sentiment that most people feel, when their bins aren't any better. Eco-sentiment can be a powerful marketing tool. Things you should note about composting:
1. Temperatures can get quite hot in the pile, and can create a fire hazard, so don't put right next to your house or whatever, because all that dry grass etc that you put in there is perfect fuel. it's not that common of a problem, but it has happened to people before.
2. If you're really serious about decomposing stuff, turn/agitate your pile (a pitch fork works great, and you get to feel like a country bumpkin!) this also serves to increase decomposition rate and lets heat out of the pile,decreasing fire risk. Once a month would be plenty. once every two to four months is fine too. The idea is to get as much air in there as possible.
3.To limit odors, don't put meat into the compost; you'll get maggots and all sorts of nasty things. Corn cobs also don't break down very well so avoid throwing them in to the mix.
4. once you're done (e.g. once a year) you should have some nice black material that you could use to plant plants in. Great for flower beds that kind of stuff. This depends on how well everything breaks down. If you get some nice looking stuff that looks like potting soil then go ahead and use it, if not, let it cook for another year.
5. Adding a bit of black soil from your yard can help increase your decomposition rate. you're inoculating your pile with all sorts of acari (mites), collembola (springtails), bacteria, fungi, and lumbricids (earthworms).
I've never done composting before, so I can't guarantee results, but this should work pretty well.
