Preparing Your Garden for Fall
As we say goodbye to those hot summer days, it is now time to begin preparing your garden for the cooler weather. A drop in temperature is likely to leave your once pretty garden looking dry and tired. Don't let it become completely ruined. Here are some tips about cleaning it up for the fall and winter months.
When removing some of your plants out, be sure that plenty of their seeds fall on the ground. This will guarantee that they will come up next year. You can also let flowerheads ripen and dry on the stalks – letting the seeds spread over the ground then mulch lightly.
Great reseeders include: poppes, alyssum, sunflowers, coreopsis, flax, dill, and bachelor buttons.
Recommendation: get rid of any plants with diseases, pests, and any leaves with black spots.
To restore a bed for spring planting:
1. Clear all debris
2. Plow the soil
3. Lay down fertilizer
4. Till again
5. Smooth with a garden rake
There are a few plants that will give your yard those beautiful fall colors. The common plant is called chrysanthemums (also known as mums). In addition to mums, you can try planting ornamental peppers.

Growing flower seeds in a balcony planter did i plant them right?
the planters are 5 1/2 inches deep and 6 inches wide ... and 3 feet long. I put some old potting soil with styrofoam bubbles (from old house plants) on the bottom for about 2 inches, then i put 1 inch of new potting soil above it and place a variety of snapdragon, bachelor buttons, marigolds, and a wild flower mix throughout the planters, and covered all seeds with another 1/2 to 1 inch of new soil and watered carefully untill completely saturated.
.... the question .....
I have about 2 1/2 + inches of space from the top edge of the planter to the soil inside... is this too deep? should the soil surface be closer to the top of the planter?
That should be okay, as you want some room for water to stay when you are watering the planter. Also, that will give the plants some stability.

Academic Dress of the University of Wales
The academic dress of the University of Wales was designed for the first graduations in 1893, and has as its main identifying feature a faculty colour scheme involving 'shot silks'.
Undergraduates wear a gown of black stuff, in the Oxford scholar's shape.
Bachelors, holders of advanced first degrees (such as the MChem, MMath, etc) and holders of foundation degrees or undergraduate diplomas wear a black stuff or silk gown of the Oxford BA shape, but with the forearm seam divided for 4" and the two flaps turned back and held in place with two buttons; between the flaps is a short length of black ribbon, held by a third button.
Masters (except holders of advanced first degrees) wear a black stuff or silk gown of the Oxford MA shape with inverted-T armholes and the lower point of the sleeve boot replaced by a right angle.
Doctors in undress wear the masters' gown.

Doctors wear a hood of crimson (in the case of the PhD, EngD, DNursSc, DClinPsy, DEdPsy and DMin) or scarlet (in the case of the higher doctorates DD, LLD, MD, DMus, DLitt, DSc, DScEcon and DChD) cloth, lined and bound in the relevant faculty colour silk.
Undergraduates, holders of diplomas or foundation degrees, bachelors and masters, as well as doctors in undress, wear a black cloth mortar board.
Doctors in full dress wear a black velvet mortar board.
